Hospitals across India are significantly improving patient experience by implementing QR code-based registration systems. This innovative approach, part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), has already benefited approximately five lakh patients since its introduction in October 2022. By enabling quick, paperless registration, the technology aims to eliminate lengthy queues and streamline healthcare access.
Key Takeaways
- Over 500,000 patients have used QR code registration since October 2022.
- The ‘Scan and Share’ service is active in 365 government and private hospitals.
- It reduces manual data entry, leading to faster token generation and fewer errors.
- Patients’ health records are digitally linked to their Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA).
- The initiative aims to enhance system efficiency and patient satisfaction.
Streamlining OPD Services with Technology
The ‘Scan and Share’ service, introduced by the National Health Authority (NHA) under ABDM, allows patients to scan a unique QR code displayed at hospital registration areas. Using various health applications like the ABHA app, Aarogya Setu, or Paytm, patients can instantly share their demographic information, including name, age, gender, and ABHA number. This digital transfer eliminates the need for manual data entry, which was a major cause of long queues and potential errors in the past.
Basant Garg, additional CEO of NHA, explained that this process enables paperless registration and instant token generation. Patients save valuable time, while healthcare facilities can optimize their resources. Furthermore, this system digitally links patient health records to their ABHA, allowing them to manage and access their information conveniently from their phones.
Widespread Adoption and Impact
The ‘Scan and Share’ service is currently operational in 125 districts across 25 states and Union Territories. Karnataka leads in adoption with 2.5 lakh tokens generated, followed by Uttar Pradesh (1.1 lakh) and Delhi (72,000). The NHA has also registered over two lakh health facilities in the Health Facility Registry (HFR), a crucial component of ABDM that provides verified information on healthcare providers nationwide.
Addressing Healthcare Accessibility Challenges
Long waiting times at Outpatient Departments (OPDs) have been a significant barrier to accessing quality healthcare, often extending for hours and increasing the risk of cross-infection in crowded waiting areas. The manual data entry process further exacerbates these delays. The ‘Scan and Share’ feature, inspired by the success of digital payment systems like UPI, offers a digital solution to transfer demographic data securely and efficiently.
Inclusivity and Future Outlook
The initiative also considers users without smartphones. Individuals with an existing ABHA card can have it scanned at the OPD counter for registration. Those without an ABHA card can generate one at the health facility with the assistance of ABDM volunteers. With over 31 crore ABHA numbers generated and 10 crore health records linked, the ABDM ecosystem is rapidly scaling, paving the way for a more accessible and efficient digital healthcare future in India.
